Rwanda money and SIM card

Two small things make daily life much easier in Rwanda: a little local cash and a working SIM. Here is how visitors usually handle both.

Ask a local planner

Money

The local currency is the Rwandan franc (RWF). In Kigali, cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants and larger shops, but cash is useful for smaller places, markets, tips and rural areas. Mobile money is widely used locally. It is sensible to carry some cash once you leave the city.

Exchange rates and card acceptance vary, so do not rely on a card alone outside Kigali.

Staying connected

A local SIM card or an eSIM is inexpensive and makes maps, messaging and ride apps far easier, especially outside the city. SIMs are commonly available on arrival and around the city; bring an unlocked phone or set up an eSIM before you fly.

Your driver can usually point you to a convenient place to buy and register a SIM.

Specific prices, providers and registration steps change. Confirm current details locally or with official sources when you arrive.
